Budgies also called as budgerigar or parakeets are delightful birds that make great pets. It has been over a year I have budgies as pets. Initially, I started with 4 budgies and now I have over 30 budgies.

While some pet owners prefer a cat or dog companion, it is critical to consider your own lifestyle and living condition before bringing a larger animal into your home. As great as pets might be, they occasionally take more time, money, and attention than you can provide.

Out of my experience I want to share the top 10 reasons why I believe budgies are the best pet.

1. Budgies take up very less space

Budgies and other little budgies bird species are excellent companions for folks with limited room. A budgie is one of the tiniest parrots, measuring only seven inches long. As a result, a budgie’s cage does not need to be very huge.

Most budgie cages are small enough to fit into even the tiniest of living areas; at the very least, the cage must be tall enough for your budgie’s head and tail to never touch the top and bottom of his cage at the same time.

Make sure your budgie can freely move about inside his cage; for a horizontally-flying budgie, width is more vital than height in a cage.

These tiny cute creatures need a very small space unlike a cat or a dog. If you have trained them they will not even need a cage. My budgies are usually flying around the house.

2. Budgies do not need much care

A budgie parrot is one of the most simple pets to look after. While you’re at work or performing chores around the house, a bird is quite fine to be in his cage.

He’ll be OK as long as he has enough of stimulating toys. However, you must have the appropriate toys in the appropriate sizes and constructed of non-toxic materials.

Birds don’t need to go for walks outside, and housebreaking isn’t something you need be concerned about unless you’re up for a challenge. Cleaning the cage is also not a hard part as you could place a newspaper on the cages tray which makes cleaning the cage easier.

The only problem with budgies which I noticed would be they catch cold very soon. You can overcome this by making sure the room is quite warm and ac or fan is not turned on.

3. Budgies are not at all expensive

Compared to the dog breeds like German Shepherd or Doberman or even the cats like Persian Cat, the budgies are really cheap. It appears COVID has affected the prices of puppies as well. A Doberman puppy easily starts in the range of Rs.10,000 to Rs.15,000. Whereas, on average a pair of budgies price in India falls in the range of Rs.500 to Rs.1000. I got mine for Rs.700 in Bangalore and I believe some places it could be much cheaper.

Common colors are usually charged less by breeders. While the cage may be the most expensive part of adopting a new budgie, everything else is rather inexpensive.

When stored properly, a little bag of high-quality seed for your budgie can last several months.

It is not necessary to spend a lot of money on budgie treats!

4. You’ll be charmed by budgies

Although budgies are quieter than many other bird species, they are nevertheless very loud, especially males. They enjoy singing, especially when they are pleased and content.

Budgies can remember a wide range of tunes and have a wide range of songs; their melodies are typically a cheerful, intricate combination of trills, chirps, and whistles.

When you sing or whistle with your budgie, he will frequently imitate you. In an attempt to outdo you, he may even add his own flair. Who needs a radio when a budgie can sing for long periods of time?

5. Budgies are smart

Birds are excellent pets because they are extremely intelligent. The forebrain neurons in their tiny brains are tiny and tightly packed, adding support to the theory that birds, notably budgies, are extremely intelligent.

It simply takes a few minutes of watching a budgie to notice that they have exceptional problem-solving ability, which is another sign of high intelligence.

Their imitating abilities indicate superior cognitive abilities, as well as a remarkable capacity for learning new things quickly.

Male budgies are exceptionally proficient at speaking and learning new phrases, so it’s no surprise that the bird with the greatest vocabulary ever recorded was a male budgie.

Puck, a California budgie, is officially regarded as the bird with the most words, according to the Guinness Book of World Records from 1995. This clever little budgie was able to communicate in almost 1,700 words.

6. Budgies lifespan

Budgies live for seven to fifteen years on average. Take extra precautions to keep your budgie healthy if you want them to live a long time.

Budgies that are well-cared for, exercised, and fed extra fruits and vegetables on a daily basis have been known to live long into their twenties!

In reality, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, a male bird named Charlie from England is the world’s oldest budgie, having died at the age of little over twenty-nine.

7. Pet Therapy

Pet therapy has been shown to help people cope with anxiety and even physical discomfort. The presence of animals, including budgies, is beneficial to terminal patients, veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, and patients in physical rehabilitation.

Some universities are even allowing pets in dorm rooms because they’ve noticed how having a pet may help with homesickness during the semester or test anxiety during finals week.

8. Budgies Are Generally Healthy

They will be strangers to the vet as long as they have a super-healthy diet and a clean environment (cages should be spruced up once every two weeks). Budgies will also let you know if they aren’t feeling well on rare instances. They’ll cease talking nonstop, sleep during the day, and sit on their perch looking melancholy and ‘droopy.’

Because, like with any other animal, there is the possibility of sickness. Give them a daily visual check to see if they’re still as happy and chirpy as before. If you’re still unsure, go over our list of potential issues and speak with a veterinarian. They’re likely to have never met your budgie before!

9. Budgies Can Talk

Budgies communicate all day, in a variety of moods that you quickly learn to recognize. Not all of the ‘talking’ is in the form of human words; in fact, many, if not most, birds never master them. But it makes no difference. It’s a lot of fun if your bird learns a few words and phrases, but even if it doesn’t, budgie sounds are a lot of fun. Female budgies are less likely than males to speak. Around half of them may be able to recognize human language. If you begin teaching children during their first nine months, they have a better chance of learning. Some take a lot of time and effort to learn, while others appear to pick up terms quickly.

10. Fantastic Personality

You can’t train a pet canary or finch past the basic perching-on-a-finger level, as lovely as they are. Budgies, on the other hand, may learn a wide range of talents, from responding to your call to navigating tunnels, skateboarding, and maneuvering a ball through obstacles.

Bonding with your budgie is the key to mastering these skills. It’s more than just taming – it’s a human-bird friendship, the kind of bond that only an intelligent animal can develop. Budgies aren’t alone in this; the parrot family as a whole is known for its grey matter. However, intelligence appears to be even more astonishing in a little bird like a budgie.
