If you are one of those dog lovers who are inseparable from your dog and want to take them anywhere you go then this post is a must read for you on how to travel with dog. Couple of days back I was speaking to my friend to check how does he handle his retriever when he goes out of town and I realized he forced the poor dog in a pet stay as his dog was not cooperative. Can you imagine the trauma the dog will have to go through?

I decided to help him and did some research on this topic and implemented some myself. I have a doberman and she is very scared to come in a car, but after following some of the tips now things have become much more easier and not a daunting task.

How to travel with dog in car

Keeping the dog calm
If your dog was never used to entering a car then you should start with that. When you are free at home, just try to make your dog walk around your car and let your dog get comfortable with the car. Once you gain the confidence then you could open the car and ask her to jump in the car, if she hesitates then place a dog treat and she will fall for it.

Do not yet start the drive, this needs patience. Once you feel your dog has become comfortable after few days, then you can try short drives like grocery store or dropping someone outside.

Water
This is very important, when dogs get tensed they feel like drinking a lot of water. Make sure to carry a dog bowl and a bottle of water always when your dog travels with you.

Dealing with fur
While some car seat materials resist dog hair better than others, the best way to keep dog hair off of your seats is to groom your dog. Brush your dog’s coat well before you take her for a ride, and brush her hair very well if you are about to take her on a lengthy road trip. Use a vacuum or lint roller to remove dog hair that does find its way onto your seats. You may also buy a dog seat cover to help protect your seats.

Dog crates
Most do not like this option, but dog crates are usually recommended if you have a hyper active dog and to avoid accidents. If you have trained your dog to remain calm when seeing other dogs or strangers then you would not need a crate. Again while choosing a crate make sure not to take too small or too big for the dog. Potty problems
If your dog is not used to long drives, then there is a high chance your dog might forget potty discipline. To avoid such accidents it is better you consider getting a dog car cover something like below or can buy from here .

Most importantly you should be ready to support your dog and be calm at all instance. I would recommend to start taking your dog for a drive from a young age than once it is a full grown adult.

I hope these tips helped you and you will next time consider travelling with your dog.
