In India now there are many domestic and imported dog breeds in India. I have put some efforts to short down some top dog breeds in India.
If you are getting your first dog then you should consider reading preparing to be a dog owner.
Alright, now you decided to get yourself a dog, hoping that you read what to keep in mind before choosing your first dog. I believe all dogs are good and I generally do not like stereotyping breeds. The dogs nature is completely dependent on how the dog was bought up by the owner and the dog’s nature is going to be the replica of the owner. Best dog breeds for family in India depends on various conditions like
- Staying in farm house
- Staying in a villa/bungalow
- Staying in an apartment
- Have a baby or a kid
- You are a working couple
- You do not eat non veg
I could add lot of reasons and the list can go on. Before buying you should really consider most of the above reasons and decide the right breed. I have segregated some of the best dog breeds below which might help you identify if they really fit you or not and if you can really maintain the dog or not.
List of best dog breeds in India
Rottweiler
Rottweiler’s are a powerful breed and well suited as guard dogs. Unfortunately it is stereotyped as one of the dangerous dog breeds in India. However like I said a dogs behavior is replica of the owner and according to me rottweiler’s are very lovable large dogs irrespective of its strength. They have a high energy and a evening and morning walk is really recommended. As they are powerful it is advised to train the dog such that it obeys the family members. I would not recommend this as an apartment dog as it would need some space to run around. If taken good care of a rottweiler it can have a lifespan of up to 10 years. Skin diseases such as itchy skin and bacterial infection is common in rottweilers.
Overall, rottweilers are very protective of their home and do not welcome strangers easily. If you live in a place where you are constantly visited by strangers then I would not recommend rottweilers. If you are living in a farm house then rottweilers are the best dogs for you.
Dachshund
Dachshund is a lively breed and easily gets along well with the family. Dachshund is well known for its short height and long bodies. Because of its small size you can have dachshund as an apartment dog or even in smaller homes. Dachshund has a tendency to become lazy and overweight so a daily walk is recommended.
Pomeranian
Another one of the smallest dog breeds in India is the Pomeranian, widely called as ‘Pom’ is a toy breed. They can easily be treated as a best apartment dog or small home dog. They do not need much exercise and easy to maintain. The only drawback is the constant hair grooming which is needed due to the hair fall. They are great toy dogs for adults and kids and very friendly.
Doberman
Doberman is one of those intelligent large dogs – one of the smartest dog breeds and very easy to train. But due to their size they are not recommended for apartments and they need to be on a strict diet and need strict exercise. They are generally not well suited for small homes as they are very active dogs and love running. They are even used for dog races. Doberman can easily go to depression when it misses its owner. Again Doberman is like a Rottweiler and most suited for farmhouses or bungalows where they an really stretch their legs. By the way I have a doberman and I just love her. One of the video with my baby playing with my dog is on YouTube.
Pug
Popularly once upon a time was known as the Vodafone dog. Pug is one of the smallest dog breeds in India and one of the cutest dog breeds in India. It is a really cute dog except for its funny face and the tongue which constantly wets its nose. Pugs are easy to maintain and do not need much focus. Pugs are a darling with kids. Pugs are easily suited for apartment and houses which do not have a big place for it to play. I am actually planning to get my son a pug so that he can play with a doberman, pom and now a pug.
German Shepherd
German Shepherd popularly used for defense and other military activities are best guard dogs in India. German shepherds need to be trained to socialize else they could become nervous and overprotective with strangers. They are a very good companion dogs with kids and there are couple of videos in YouTube where they take care of babies like their own.
Golden Retriever / Labrador Retriever
I have grouped Golden Retrieve and Labrador Retriever to same category as both of them have similar traits. They are the perfect protective family dog and welcoming to strangers. Both the retrievers are highly energetic and demand a daily workout. You could have noticed lot of retriever’s out their are overweight and suffer a problem of knee injury due to their weight. Retrievers love playing the game of fetch and any games. As a fact retrievers know to play fetch naturally without any training. If you are someone who do not have time for a workout for your dog then please do not get any retriever.
Indian Pariah
Indian Pariah also known as the ‘Desi Kutta’ or the ‘Indian Stray Dog’ are the best breed to have. They can suit any environment – apartment or farmhouse. They do not demand attention and do not demand a workout. They are very easy to maintain and very loyal. Indian Pariah’s can be easily trained to hunt or guard. In India most families stay far from the breed keeping their status in mind. Please keep in mind all dogs are equal they just look different in size and coat.
I would recommend most of my readers to adopt an Indian Pariah or what most Indians call a “Desi kutta”. As a takeaway I want to strongly recommend my readers to take your dog irrespective of the breed for a walk daily as it will keep both of you fit and develop a bonding between you and the dog.
Happy adoption and do contact me in case of any queries with regards to petting.
